about
Iris Leonie.
I’m Iris Leonie van Leeuwen, a Dutch ceramic artist based in Madrid. I make functional and sculptural ceramics: cups, bowls, teapots, vases, and relief tiles with animal and nature motifs. I enjoy combining wheel-thrown forms with handbuilt textures. My work is rooted in making by hand and in a close relationship with the sea, mountains and the landscapes I adventure in.

Nature and playfulness shape my visual language. Many pieces begin outdoors: textures, patterns and animal forms become surface work or sculptural additions. A glazed dot on my functional ware acts as a sun and a daily rhythm. It’s a warm mark that recurs across my work. I produce small batches and unique pieces and accept commissions. The portfolio shows a curated selection of my best and most representative work; please contact me for current availability, pricing or additional images.
Woodfiring taught me patience and the beauty of unpredictability. I love it and am developing this practice further. I’m exploring ways to incorporate wild natural materials and new combinations of thrown and handbuilt techniques. I value aesthetics and the care that well-made handmade objects inspire. I believe objects that are loved and kept are more sustainable. I teach creative ceramics workshops that guide people to make nature-inspired work in an open, supportive setting.
